Federal Detention Center in Rancho
Officials of the Town of Sahuarita have admitted to “dropping the ball” with respect to the proposed location of a Federal detention center on Tribal lands. Amazingly, in a November 2008 e-mail, the Town’s Economic Development Manager told Jim Stahle, the Town Manager, that she intended to meet with the San Xavier Economic Development Director in December “to determine if there are areas of collaborative planning,” in regard to the prison. Stahle forwarded the information on the proposed prison to all of the council members on November 12th, but they didn’t take any action.
Even more surprising are the Town’s April 16th positive review comments on this proposal. The Town stated that “Sahuarita looks forward to working closely with the San Xavier District of the Tohono O’odham Nation in providing for a new facility that is an outstanding example of well-planned development.” However, Bob Sharpe, the developer of our award-winning, master planned community, doesn’t feel that a prison is an appropriate adjacent use to a residential community like Rancho Sahuarita.
This is more than just dropping the ball. The Town did not keep residents informed and did not gather community input before sending positive messages to the Tribe about this prison. At the May 11th Council meeting, Tom Murphy, our community liaison, requested that the Council approve a resolution to oppose the location of this prison at its next meeting. Rancho Sahuarita is forming a committee of our residents to encourage the Town Council to act decisively. Please contact Town Council members requesting that they pass the anti-prison resolution. If you want to get involved call Tom Murphy at 256-6076.
